Manuel is a retired psychiatrist who has been drawing faces his whole life. He was a finalist in the Portrait Society of Canada's national online portrait competition in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. He has been an Elected Member of the Portrait Society of Canada since 2014. There is an interview with Manuel in the February 2014 issue of the online portrait magazine Portrait Atelier.
His portraits are in the expressionist tradition. They offer an escape from photo-realism and a journey into the soul, essence, and spirit of the person. It is all about emotional resonance. When the emotional vulnerability of the subject meets the vulnerability of the viewer, there is an opportunity for recognition, reflection, and transcendence.
His photographs capture moments of stillness, beauty, and joie de vivre.
He likes to quote the John Prine song "Flashback Blues"
"Photographs show the laughs/ Recorded in between the bad times/ Happy sailors dancing on a sinking ship."
His favorite artists are Egon Schiele, Mark Rothko, Saul Steinberg, Amedeo Modigliani, Wassily Kandinsky, and Elizabeth Peyton.
His motto is "ad astra per aspera." (to the stars through the bars).
